The Perception Of Age

It’s amazing how people are conditioned to think in a certain way. The old adage ‘You’re only as old as you feel’, may be true, and if that is the case, some people feel very young, and some very old.

I was talking to someone at work today, and she told me about a doctor she knew, a sixty-year-old man, older than either one of us. He’s a body builder, chiseled like granite, loves riding his Harley, and has a wife half his age. Apparently, she has trouble matching the energy level of this guy. The guy sounded pretty impressive to me, but not to my co-worker. She seemed to think he was being ridiculous acting the way he was at “his age”. “That body looks so silly with that old head”, she exclaimed. Well, “that body” must be looking pretty good if it doesn’t go with the old head. Her? Mid-fifties, bum leg, overactive thyroid, taking several medications, and feeling every one of her years. I imagine my insurance premium going up just looking at her. (Gee, I hope she doesn’t stumble across this blog!). It would have been futile to argue with her. She is set in her ways, and at this point she probably won’t change.

Me? When I’m sixty, if I’m pumping iron, riding motorcycles, and giving women half my age a run for their money, I’m going to be pretty happy.
