Batter Up: A Lesson In Persistence

We have all had some goal that we have strived for in the past, and we have all had the displeasure of that goal not coming to fruition. The question is, did you try again, or let that goal fall by the wayside?

Let’s use a baseball paradigm to show how persistence pays off. If a batter hits .300, he is considered a good hitter. That means he gets 3 hits for every 10 at bats. That also means that he either makes an out, or forces one of his teammates out 7 out of every 10 at-bats. This “good” hitter, fails 70% of the time! Does this make him a poor player? On the contrary, he’s good, because he keeps trying until he does get a hit. The persistence of the baseball player is an example of what you can do in your own life. You may not get what you want every time, but if you keep trying…

Guys, lets take a situation we’ve all been in. You see a pretty girl, and you’d like to talk to her, but you know she would never go for you, never give you the time of day. That may be true. Go talk to her anyway. The odds are that 3 of every 10 pretty girls you talk to will give you the time of day. And here’s the good news: you only need one of those girls to show interest and-you have succeeded. The point is to keep trying until you succeed. I know it’s easier to say than to do, but it is a proven formula guaranteed to bring success.

This can be applied to just about anything in your life. That difficult exam, a big promotion at work-anything that may require persistence. Like the baseball player that just keeps trying, success will eventually come. Of course there are measures you can take to increase the odds of success, but that’s another post…
