Efficient Time Management

For many people, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. Work, the kids and other mandatory obligations take up a fair portion of the day, and in the end, time just runs out. There are some things you can do to make your days time more efficient though.

Getting a planner can be an invaluable resource. They’re relatively inexpensive, and are excellent for keeping your thoughts in order. Many “smart phones” have built in planners with alarms to remind you as well. Whatever you want to use, get something.

I will post something on goal setting at a later date, but for now, let’s assume you have your ultimate goals, your yearly, weekly, and now you’re down to the daily things that you wil do to make those longer term goals a reality. Having these taks in your head can be a messy thing, and there is a good chance that you will forget things, or just run out of time. Here’s where the planner comes in. Write (or type) the things you will do for the day the night before. Obviously, obligations like work will take up a portion of the day, but you can still get things done even during that time. Let’s say you work in an office and want to get some exercise during the day. It could be difficult, especially if your company does not offer exercise facilities. The Mayo Clinic has some excellent exercises you can do right at your desk. If you blog, how about jotting down some notes throughout the day so when you do write a post, you have the basic framework already. If you’re driving, or taking the bus, get yourself some cd’s or mp3 files to listen to. Maybe it will be a language learning product, or motivational self-development talks-whatever the case, make your time productive, and take note of every minute.

Initially, at least, put everything in that planner. Taking the shirts to the cleaner tomorrow? Put in down. Cleaning the bathroom? Put it down. Seeing those things on your schedule will cause your mind to formulate a time management strategy that will make it much more likely those tasks will be accomplished.

Try it for a week. You’ll be surprised at how much you get done.
